Helen Purvis


HELEN PURVIS, born c. 1786 at ? Fleming ? (? possibly Dunfermline ?), Fife, died 18th February 1875 aged 88 years at 25 East Claremont Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, where she was also living (aged 85) in 1871 with her daughter Eliza Russell Bruce (1.1.3.1.1.5.), her grandson Thomas Purvis Bruce (1.1.3.1.1.6.1.) and granddaughter Ann Purvis Bruce Adam (1.1.3.1.1.4.1.). Married (16th November 1810 in Torryburn Parish, Fife, Scotland) James Bruce (died before 1871), distiller at Tulliallan, Perthshire, (at this time Tulliallan parish was a detached part of Perthshire, but was transferred to Fife in 1889), (according to "The Making of Scotch Whisky" BY Michael S. Moss and John R. Hume) James Bruce owned the distillery at Tulliallan, Fife (Register House Plan RHP853 of 1806), 1813 - 1814, while John Primrose owned it 1817-25. About 1825 it was purchased by the Stein and Haig families who were buying and closing many small distilleries in the Clackmannan/West Fife area in an attempt to rationalise the industry. It was ruinous by 1830 and the present Tulliallan Church was built on the site of the Tun room, opening for worship in October 1833). He was probably descended from James Bruce of Clackmannan (born 1722). They had six children:-
