Alexander Purvis (alick) Jack

Biographical Information: ALEXANDER PURVIS JACK (ALICK), born 21st December 1889 at 6 Mansfield Place, Edinburgh, Scotland, died 27th November 1966 at 18 Eglinton Crescent, Edinburgh. Witness at his elder brother John McGregor Bruce Jack's marriage (1921) and death (1943), when his address was 46 Great King Street, Edinburgh, the same as Alexia Butter Jack, who seems to have been a distant relative (if at all), born c.1863, died December 1948, daughter of John Jack, joiner, and Jane Duncan, both of Newtyle, Dundee, Scotland. He lived near Brechin, Angus, Scotland, and at Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland, and (1938) at Raddery House, Rosemarkie, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland, before moving to Edinburgh. Executor (1962) of the estate of, and informant of the death of, Rev. John Fleming Philip, widower of his 1st and 2nd cousin Helen McIntosh (see 1.1.3.1.1.4.1.1. below), when he was living at 4 Napier Road, Edinburgh. Appointed (1909) to the Indian Police Service, Assistant Superintendent until April 1917, Superintendent of Police (April 1917 to February 1935) in command of the Central Provinces, India. He at one time held Mahatma Gandhi as his prisoner - "a most interesting man", he said. Awarded (1930) the King's Police Medal for gallantry. Retired 1937. His home at time of death (1966) was 14 Woodhall Bank, Edinburgh. Unmarried.
