Biographical Information: JOSEPH PURVIS, born c.1761 at Ross, Northumberland, England, died shortly before November 1811. When his daughter Martha Purvis (see 1.1.3.4.3. below) married in 1819 he was described as "the late Joseph Purvis, Esq., Liverpool". Served with the East India Company Naval Service and also served "before the mast" in the Royal Navy, Captain of a Privateer ("Letter of Marque"), captured (? c.1809) and held as a prisoner of war in France.
