Biographical Information: JOSEPH MATHESON PURVIS (JOE), born c.1839, died 3rd November 1909, aged 70, at Puckeridge, Braughing, Hertfordshire, England. East India merchant who retired, while still in his 40s, to live in England. He had a place of business in London c.1877 when Robert Raaff Purvis (see 1.1.3.5.2.1. below) called on him. "Had spent some time in the Malay Penninsula but for many years had resided with his family at Puckeridge" (obituary in the Herts & Essex Observer of 13th November 1909). Living (1886) at Standon, Hertfordshire, and (1888) at Puckeridge. Married (18??) Sarah Ann Hayden (born c.1847/1848 at Standon, died 4th March 1910 aged 62 at Puckeridge), living (1881) with three of their children (Janet, Joseph and Margaret) in the home of her uncle (her mother's brother) William Knight (born c.1808) at 91 Standon Street, Standon, daughter of ….. Hayden and ….. Knight, and sister of William Hayden (born c.1837) who was unmarried in 1881, having seven children:-
